It shouldn't be a surprise that someone in the horse show would step forward to donate to research into the tricky Equine Herpes Virus. After all, it is a disease that can kill both horses and the equine economy. To aid the effort to stop EHV, Wellington Equestrian Partners (WEP) and Tequestrian Farms have formed a joint partnership to donate $100,000 to the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky. The money will be earmarked toward research of the EHV-1 neurologic disease. A special Veterinary Committee is planned, and WEP and Tequestrian will also lead in gathering information for established protocols for owners, treating veterinarians, and horse show managers to prevent and neutralize EHV-1 at equestrian events.

A press release from Equestrians Sports Productions covers a situation at Palm Beach International equestrian sports facility in Wellington, Florida. FEI Stabling is now closed and some classes have been cancelled after a horse at a nearby farm tested position for Equine Herpes Virus. Please note that no sick horses have been identified on the grounds, and that the only horse that did test positive was on private property, which has now been quarantined. Stablemates of the sick horse stabled on the grounds prompted the closing of the FEI stable area.

The show issued an update statement today and a seminar with veterinarians is planned for Tuesday, February 26.
