Rumors abound of the practice of "cranking" on padded nosebands of dressage horses, as if a tight noseband gives some advantage of either control of the horse, keeping the mouth closed, or enforcing a prescribed headset in the arena--or all three effects. Today the International Society for Equitation Science (ISES) responded to the controversy with a press release calling for steward inspection of nosebands and a mandatory looseness level that would allow two fingers to fit under the noseband. The Jurga Report looks at this latest controversy in the world of sport horses as the London 2012 Olympics approach.
